Singapore households and housing: reading the Census evidence

A source-led guide to household, dwelling and geographic data without turning demographic trends into price forecasts.

Published 2 July 2021

Updated September 2026. The 2020 Census remains a historical benchmark; newer General Household Survey series should be used for current household conditions.

Start with the official statistical series

Singapore Department of Statistics publishes the Census of Population 2020 household and geographic release together with updated Table Builder series. The current household-size and dwelling tables note which years are Census, General Household Survey or labour-force-survey estimates.

Four housing questions the data can support

  1. How household size and living arrangements are changing.
  2. How resident households are distributed across dwelling types.
  3. Where age profiles and household composition differ by area.
  4. Which housing needs may grow if those patterns persist.

What the data cannot prove

Population and household trends do not by themselves predict a project's price. Supply, tenure, affordability, policy, financing, location and unit-specific attributes also matter. Survey estimates carry sampling variability, while census categories and planning boundaries may differ from property-market segments.

Use a reproducible property lens

State the series, reference year, population definition and geography. Compare demographic evidence with current HDB and URA supply, transactions and plans. Present scenarios rather than converting a national trend into a guaranteed demand or appreciation claim.
