What Would The World Look Like Without The Federal Reserve?

Updated September 2026. This is a dated macroeconomic thought experiment, not financial, currency or property advice.

Start with what the Federal Reserve actually does

The Federal Reserve is the United States' central bank. Its official mandate and operating responsibilities include monetary policy, bank supervision and regulation, financial-system stability, and payment and government financial services. See the Federal Reserve's purpose statement.

A world without it would still need these functions

Removing one institution would not remove the need for liquidity management, settlement infrastructure, bank oversight or crisis response. Those functions could move to the Treasury, private clearing arrangements, other regulators or a replacement central bank—with different accountability and risk.

Why outcomes cannot be predicted mechanically

  • Interest rates would still reflect inflation, savings, credit risk and fiscal conditions.
  • Private money and payment systems still require confidence and settlement rules.
  • A lender-of-last-resort gap could amplify runs, while an alternative framework might change incentives.
  • Global markets would reprice according to the replacement regime, not a simple absence.
